Metro Water Recovery - Robert W. Hite Treatment Facility Improvements
Our client, Metro Water Recovery, was dedicated to achieving a more sustainable future by reducing phosphorus loading to the Robert W. Hite Treatment Facility (RWHTF) effluent receiving waters—the South Platte River. The significant investment towards this goal has resulted in a facility that removes the dangerous but useful and finite resource.
The project team engaged included Stantec, Hazen, and PCL Construction, all tasked with piloting, designing, procuring, constructing, commissioning, and successfully starting a Phosphorus Recovery Facility. Within our role, we provided operational support and process optimization for new technology—notably, the trademark MagPrex™ phosphorus recovery process by CNP-Technology Water and Biosolids Corporation. The reactor achieves over 90% phosphorus removal of which approximately 20% is recovered in the form of struvite for reuse as a slow-release fertilizer product.
Reducing phosphorus in the river will result in improved overall water quality for aquatic life. Recovering phosphorous in the form of struvite results in a reduction in carbon emissions by enabling the offsetting of commercial fertilizer operations—a beneficial circular economy.
