Designing the foundations of a new and improved mine camp community

The Gudai-Darri mine camp is located northwest of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Owned and operated by our client, Rio Tinto, the mine expansion is designed to be one their largest mining communities in Western Australia. Their appointed contractor, Pindan Contractors, engaged us to complete the structural engineering design for all elements and the in-grounds concrete design as well as in situ dining hub for this major project.

This was the first camp design to focus on the inclusion and safety of workers, to improve the traditional fly-in fly-out camp reputation as Rio Tinto try to attract the next generation of workers into the industry. The new camp facilities include 1,500 accommodation rooms, community areas, dining, sporting, and recreational spaces for the mining workforce and their service staff.

May 2019 saw completion of the first two project stages. Stages three and four will be completed as a phased redevelopment to the mining camp expansion over the coming years.
