This new bridge crossing improves a vital transportation link between South Dakota communities.

The existing bridge carrying highways US14, US83, and SD34 over the Missouri River connects state capital Pierre with historic Fort Pierre. To enhance that community connection, we’re designing a new gateway bridge and its approaches to replace the existing, aging structure.

During design, our team focused on delivering a functional bridge crossing that minimizes future maintenance and life cycle costs. The project also provides enhancements for its adjoining communities, such as bicycle and pedestrian connections and a new park plaza under the bridge. The new seven-span, 1,686-foot (514-metre) long bridge features haunched steel plate girders, marine-drilled shaft supported piers, and large breastwall abutments that maximize usable plaza space.

To complement the bridge’s enhanced functionality and pay homage to the area’s historic past and thriving present, we collaborated with the owner and cities to create bridge aesthetics that respond directly to its setting. Architectural treatments include neo-federalist style concrete details on the bridge piers and abutments, pedestrian viewing and seating areas, decorative roadway and pathway lighting, and architectural lighting of the bridge elements.
