Taylor Avenue Reconstruction and Bridge Replacement
With direct access to White Horse Beach, a popular public beach on Cape Cod Bay, Taylor Avenue is a densely populated and highly-trafficked roadway by residents and beachgoers. With decades of heavy use, and an aging bridge span dating to 1935, the reconstruction of this roadway had become a priority to improve multi-modal user experience and safety.
The Town of Plymouth and the State of Massachusetts turned to our team to develop roadway and bridge improvements for the reconstruction of this one-mile portion of Taylor Avenue, including the bridge over Bartlett Brook. Our team also worked with MassDOT to seek approval for utility pipe support to improve bridge aesthetics.
Thanks to the heavy traffic, the project faces an especially demanding construction schedule. To address this challenge, our strategy maximizes off-season construction (fall and spring) to maintain access for residents year-round, as well as for beachgoers during the summer.
Once complete, the improvements will establish uniform travel lanes with shoulders, accommodate shared lane use for bicyclists, provide a continuous ADA-complaint sidewalk, and formalize on-street parking along the roadway. A drainage system has also been redesigned to provide improved stormwater treatment by retrofitting a portion of the system and installing a new closed storm drainage system with leaching structures.
