Airport Trail Interchanges
Airport Trail is a crucial corridor in northeast Calgary, Alberta connecting Calgary International Airport to the city. With an increase of traffic in the area, the City of Calgary and Calgary Airport Authority were looking to enhance the corridor to accommodate future needs of the growing city.
Working with Jacobs from planning through design and construction of two interchange additions at 19 Street and Barlow Trail, our united team is improving the flow of traffic from Deerfoot Trail—one of the busiest highways in the city—directly to the airport, without any traffic light delays. Unlike typical interchange projects, the corridor roadway and bridges were redesigned with a long-term intent for light rail transit (LRT). Taking best practices from the MAX Purple Bus Rapid Transit, project, we applied futureproof designs for LRT such as planning for electrical concerns (grounding) for bridges built near LRT.
Through value engineering, we identified an opportunity to narrow the 19 Street bridge design—saving $1M in project costs. Altogether, this project is a highly anticipated enhancement to one of Calgary’s essential corridors.
