Thornton Elementary School

The original Thornton Elementary School was built in 1960 and had not been updated since. Given its outdated and poor condition, an on-site replacement project was required—we were there to help make it happen.

Serving as the prime architect, our team designed a new school that uses natural processes of energy production that are reflected in the both the building systems and student curriculum. The playful use of color and geometry within the building draw from the connection to local context with the Baylor, Scott, and White Children’s Hospital located nearby and organic uses of color are represented in surrounding natural beauty. Farm-to-table dining will be introduced to the student lifestyle as hydroponic gardens were incorporated into the design, providing freshly grown produce for use in cafeteria lunches and science curriculum.

From solar and wind generation to incorporating geothermal technologies into the building’s mechanical systems, Thornton Elementary School surpasses sustainability and shifts momentum to cultural sustainability. Ultimately, this project will strengthen and empower the community through the use of new technologies incorporated into the everyday lives of students.
