Rummel Creek Elementary School
Originally opened in 1962, Rummel Creek is the last elementary school to be rebuilt under a 2007 bond program that was planned and led by our team.
The vision of this project was to create a strong connection between the building and the adjacent creek. This relationship was created by an intimate courtyard with a meandering path, reflecting the confluence of Rummel Creek and Buffalo Bayou, elements that are emblematic of the school’s neighborhood. The new, two-story facility features wireless technology and flexible furniture throughout, four teaching wings, administrative offices, cafeteria, science labs, community spaces for group work, and a library that serves as the heart of the campus.
As a social and technology hub, the library is filled with mobile devices, and a broadcast room where students create and deliver digital presentations. Passive supervision throughout the facility is increased by the layout and the large areas of glazing connecting the classroom wings and the library around the outdoor courtyard. The courtyard is a direct expansion of these spaces, a place for kids to read, play, and connect with nature. Art, music and science rooms are located near each other in the fine arts area, with access to an outdoor art plaza and located near the noisier gym space, separated acoustically from the classroom areas.
