Trout Lake School

Located near the Peerless and Trout Lakes, Peerless Trout First Nation (PTFN) is an Indigenous community in Northern Alberta. Trout Lake needed a new K-12 school that would reflect their culture while providing a place for students to learn and grow.

Stantec, as bridging consultant, provided full architecture, engineering, and community engagement services to bring this 450-student school to life. The school acts both as a place of learning and a community centre. Spaces can be adapted for traditional Cree lessons, community events, conferences, and sports tournaments. This school includes a clean lab to teach students how to render and prepare a moose, showcasing it as part of cultural ceremonies at the school. In addition to K-12 education, the school hosts classes for the Northern Lakes College and provides students a look at opportunities for post-secondary education.

The main entrance resembles an upside-down birch canoe—a traditional means of transportation and a reminder of the community’s roots. Now complete, Trout Lake School will help shape a bright future for the community and celebrate the enduring legacy of PTFN.
