State Road A1A North Causeway Bridge Replacement

Located on State Road AIA, the North Causeway Bridge provides access across the Intracoastal Waterway near Fort Pierce, Florida. The Florida Department of Transportation had found the existing movable bridge to be structurally deficient and need to be replaced. They selected our team to provide construction engineering inspection services for the new high-level fixed span bridge.

One of our main challenges to date has been overcoming a utility conflict that set back the start of construction.  A subaqueous utility conflicted with multiple water foundation piers and led to alterations in the project schedule to accommodate required resequencing of the work. We are currently in the process of trying to obtain approval of a cost savings initiative proposal for the bridge foundation piers 1–7.

When opened to traffic in late 2025, the bridge will provide enhanced traffic flow across and underneath the bridge by getting rid wait times during bridge openings as well eliminating the costs of maintaining the existing movable bridge. Additionally, the bridge will span the nearby railroad facility thereby, eliminating the at-grade railroad crossing for motorists traveling to/from North Hutchinson Island. The bridge will also improve pedestrian and bicycle access and provide the missing “link” or section of the East Coast Greenway in St. Lucie County—this trail connects 15 states and 450 cities and towns from Florida to Maine.
