Sarasota Memorial Hospital - Courtyard Tower

Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) wanted their new patient tower to contain the latest in technology, offer easy accessibility to other hospital wings, and create a new “front door” entryway for the entire campus. Our design team helped SMH relocate the existing central energy plant so their new 9-story, 220-bed, 300,000-square-foot patient tower and associated courtyard could become the focal point of the new entrance point.

Phase one of the project included the relocation of the hospital's 40,000-square-foot central energy plant (CEP) and demolition of one the hospital’s oldest patient towers (built in the 1950s-60s). The relocation required our design accommodate many utility-infrastructure constraints while providing efficient vehicular and pedestrian access to the new patient bed tower. And the other challenge? Our team formulated a construction schedule that allowed vehicles to continuously access the existing, fully-functioning hospital and adjacent neighborhood.

We also led the design of a new courtyard space where patients, families, and staff can relax. In it, two fountains and shaded spaces provide tranquil respite and an opportunity to enjoy the café or outdoor dining. Additionally, a contemporary garden with elm trees and grasses provides a transitional space for reflection, while inspiring art installations can be seen both on the ground and from within the building.

The new tower and courtyard provide enhanced wayfinding for campus visitors, and the resulting landscape has rejuvenated the campus and set a warm, inviting aesthetic for future projects.
