Powers Ferry Road Over Nancy Creek Bridge Replacement
Constructed in 1948, the existing three-span bridge on Powers Ferry Road over Nancy Creek needed attention. The City of Atlanta reached out and engaged us to help with bridge replacement and other related services.
Coordinating closely with the City and multiple utility owners along the corridor, we designed a slightly longer, single-span box beam for the bridge replacement. The beams carry a two-lane roadway alignment with two sidewalks, one of which is built to accommodate a multiuse facility.
Our design for the roadway approaches included drainage, signing/marking, and erosion control. Additionally, we coordinated relocation of utilities, which involved attaching a water main to the bridge, directionally boring a gas line beneath the creek, and temporary de-energizing overhead power during construction.
We also provided acquisition of right-of-way, coordination with property owners, and public engagement. Public engagement played a significant role in the project’s success, particularly with the Chastain Park Conservancy and PATH Foundation on aesthetic treatments, a temporary detour route, and scheduling construction around park activities.
The new bridge provides safer passage for travelers including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
