Long Island Rail Road Expansion
Originally built in the early 1800s, the Long Island Rail Road—specifically, the portion between Floral Park and Hicksville—consisted of two tracks serving about 50,000 people. Today, those same two tracks serve closer to three million. The community needed a better solution, and recognizing that need, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority selected our team to design and build a third track to support this 9.8-mile mainline rail.
The challenge? Ensure continued safety, with minimal impact to commuters, revenue service, or adjacent communities. The goal is to reduce delays and add flexibility—while also planning for future system-wide growth. In addition to the installation of a third track within the nation’s busiest commuter rail service right of way, the project also includes the elimination of seven street-level grade crossings (improving public safety and roadway conditions). The plan also focuses on station refinements and modifications as well as related improvements to railroad signal, power, and communication systems.
With these changes, commuters will enjoy an upgraded experience and local communities will get reduced air/noise pollution. The project will also accommodate reverse and intra-island commuting service through this corridor, providing additional capacity to Grand Central Terminal and the east side of Manhattan.
