Anaheim Transportation Network ZEB Route Analysis & Charging Infrastructure
Transit agencies play an important role in the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Innovative Clean Transit regulation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet air quality standards. In response, the Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) was planning to convert its 100-bus fleet to zero emission.
Our team was engaged to help ATN develop power requirements and an accompanying charging strategy. First modeling expected fuel economy of the buses for each route, we then did a block-analysis to calculate the entire fleet’s energy demand. We developed charging schedules to ensure day to day service could be maintained and provided fuel cost projections under different scenarios for the operation of battery electric buses. Based on this analysis, we designed a new electrical system for the first 75 new bus chargers as well as the new building and ancillary yard loads. Our design includes an extensive underground power distribution system that connects each charger location to the main switchboard.
The first phase of the charging infrastructure plan will deliver approximately 46 ground-mounted chargers and dispensers. Using these buses will not only provide a reduction in costs for ATN in the long-term but will also provide cleaner air for the communities they serve.
