Johns Hopkins Proton Therapy Center
With the goal of creating a state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer treatment center to benefit the metropolitan Washington, DC, area and the broader mid-Atlantic region, Johns Hopkins embarked upon a large renovation and expansion program—part of that program is the Johns Hopkins Proton Therapy Center.
Located on the Sibley Memorial Hospital campus, directly west of the New Sibley Tower, the 72,000 square foot Proton Therapy Center is connected to the hospital and to the traditional radiation oncology wing. To complete John Hopkins’ master plan vision, our challenge was to seamlessly fit the facility into the existing campus elements and create a sense of unity.
Our solution? We designed the Johns Hopkins Proton Therapy Center to overhang the roadway, requiring a highly creative design: we lifted the huge concrete vault that houses the gantry up a level with the pit of the vault sitting on the ground. A wall of glass windows floods the second-floor patient areas with natural light, and clusters of seating mimic a living room rather than a waiting room.
Warm, soft colors and natural materials create an environment that feels safe and friendly, promoting a sense of well-being in this state-of-the-art proton treatment facility.
