Edmondson Ave Bridge Reconstruction
When the City of Baltimore Department of Transportation needed to replace a deteriorating bridge originally built in 1907, they brought us in as prime consultant. Our job was to provide comprehensive inspection engineering services, a load rating and coatings evaluation, and studies for rehabilitation versus replacement. Finally, we would design the $40 million bridge reconstruction project.
While designing, we had to consider the urban setting of Edmondson Avenue as well as the existing bridge’s historic value. Other challenges included adjacent (historic) row houses, a trail/bike path, Gwynns Falls, a railway, and a cemetery. As such, we gained consensus with various stakeholders and the public by providing timely and informative coordination—which was critical to the project’s success.
The result of our community engagement and design? A 490-foot-long, four-span, prestressed bulb-tee replacement bridge supported on 70-foot-tall multi-column piers and designed to carry future light rail service in the median.
Once complete, the reconstructed bridge will incorporate architectural arch facades to recognize the historic nature of the original structure and provides a safe and secure structure for the commuters on US 40.
