Gravel oxidation technology helped treat a water resource and provide a better lifestyle to residents

Sewer construction in the Longtan District of Taoyuan City had not yet been completed, and the urban domestic sewage was being directly discharged in nearby rivers resulting in poor water quality and a reduction in residential quality of life.

Our water and wastewater engineering team was engaged to treat the urban sewage using a gravel contact oxidation method at Si-Fang-Lin water treatment facility. While the target drainage area was right next to Longtan City, there was not enough open space nearby—the nearest land with enough area was the croquet court in a sports park two kilometers away. To earn the consent of residents, we organized briefing sessions in which locals were brought to treatment plants in Taoyuan for observation. Due to site restrictions, pipelines were designed to run directly through downtown Longtan so night-time construction was chosen to reduce the impacts on traffic and roadside stores.

Trial operation after completion revealed that the treatment efficiencies of all contaminants reached the designed values after gravel contact oxidation. This performance improved the river water quality and the Laojie Creek upstream water quality from moderately polluted to mildly polluted so that the shore environmental quality was improved for residents.
