Integrated Water Resources Management Plan for Environmental Agency

Abu Dhabi is a water-scarce nation with a growing population. Facing this, the Government created a mandate to develop strategies that would meet future water demands while preserving natural resources. Our team was there to help.

Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency is acting, through the development of an integrated water resources management plan (IWRMP), to build a comprehensive set of strategies and a governance framework to improve water management and meet targets supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6. Currently, the Emirate relies 100% on desalination for potable water and heavily on groundwater for agriculture. Our team was engaged to work with government agencies representing the water, agriculture, energy, and environmental sectors to build a consensus on what is needed, and how and who is best suited to execute new projects and institutional change. We consulted and advised on a range of options and arrived at a set of initiatives to balance and optimize the use of, potable water and recycled water, and halt the use of groundwater—as well as cross cutting actions for asset management, demand forecasting and conservation awareness.

The final plan was officially launched in February 2021 and many of the recommendations are being implemented already.
