Wastewater Treatment Plants Upgrade

Meeting new standards

The plants were out of date, but a few upgrades and some careful design got them back on track

Cordar SpA (Cordar) runs the multi-service integrated water systems for 50 municipalities in the Province of Biella. In 2013, when Cordar was looking to upgrade four wastewater treatment plants, our team won the contract. The team had designed three of the plants, and so we were set up and already familiar with their needs and particulars.

The four plants serve Cossato-Spolina, Biella north, Biella south, and Massazza. The upgrade included two main regulatory issues: the adjustment to the new and more restrictive regulations—based on new acceptable discharge limits—and the adjustment of flow rates to the primary treatments managed in the plants. The upgrade design also had to pay special attention to the nitrogen and phosphorus parameters.

In terms of population equivalent, the Cossato Spolina wastewater treatment plant has a potential to serve more than 100,000 residents, whereas the other three serve slightly smaller populations. The total project value was approximately seven million Euros.
