Axford & Ogbourne WTWs Abstraction License Reduction Scheme
When Thames Water agreed with the Environment Agency to end the use of Kennet Aquifer at Ogbourne WTW and reduce abstraction at Axford WTW, they needed to find a way to transfer water from other zones to continue to fully supply the growth area of Swindon and its surroundings.
Our Stantec team worked closely with Thames Water and the eight2O alliance to develop a solution to transfer water from the River Thames abstraction point at Farmoor via an 18 km potable pipeline from the north of Swindon to Whitefield Reservoir to the south east, crossing a mixture of woodland, agricultural, residential and industrial areas.
Our team used 3D modelling and visualisation to carefully appraise the pipeline corridor, taking into account of environmental, third party, engineering and construction constraints, and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to select the most favourable route. In designing the three new water booster stations required, we developed a modular approach that minimised site works and reduced the programme duration.
The project has enabled Thames Water to continue to provide a consistent supply of water to Swindon whilst protecting the flow of water in the River Og and River Kennet.
