De l’Aigle Elementary School

Facing an increasing student population, the Centre de services scolaires des Portages-de-l'Outaouais wanted to add a new school in the Aylmer sector of Gatineau. Looking for a new elementary school that would accommodate 650 students—with classrooms for pre-school up to grade six, day-care facilities, a triple gymnasium, a multi-purpose hall, and administrative areas—they engaged our help.

We designed everything with sustainable development in mind. Our structural team designed the building using steel and wood and incorporated a green roof. To manage rainwater and stormwater runoff, our civil engineering team designed an underground retention basin, a surface retention basin, areas of bioretention—use of natural properties of soil and vegetation to filter runoff—and permeable pavement on part of the parking area. Our services also included coordinating with the developer for permitting for the municipal services connections and designing all the hard surfaces on the school property, such as walkways, road accesses, and parking lots.

With this design for a new sustainable school, students can enjoy a modern, comfortable facility that’s resilient and ready to adapt to a changing climate.
