Robust engineering and people-focused design create a better hospital experience for all

Hospitals aren’t just some of the most iconic structures in any city—they are places where, for patients, visitors, and staff, every aspect of human experience plays out, from joy to despair. They also present nearly every aspect of design and engineering challenges. Not only do they need to meet present needs, but hospitals also need to anticipate future needs and even changes in medical technologies.

For Brisbane’s Queensland Children's Hospital, our civil, structural, and traffic engineering experts were called upon to provide solutions for several key concept and construction challenges. At the same time, our planning team developed a process to navigate the complex regulatory requirements of a hospital. No ordinary building, virtually every part of a hospital’s infrastructure, from air-handling to water and waste removal to electrical systems, is specialised in some manner.

However, infrastructure isn’t what patients, visitors and staff see. For them, we wanted their experience of the hospital to start with the brightly coloured exterior curtain wall, and inside to include open, warm, and inviting light-filled spaces. Two central atriums, a rooftop garden, and an innovative “green wall” of living plants, bring soothing natural elements into the environment.
