Enacting a wetland and floodplain mitigation design to enhance the City of Napolean

The City of Napoleon was required by a compliance schedule derived from long term control plan negotiations with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to construct a 2.5 MG equalization basin. Stantec’s recommendations for the equalization basin included the design and installation of a 30 MGD screw pump facility, a 10 MGD UV disinfection facility, and a 15 MGD final effluent pumping facility. These enhancements laid the foundation for future improvements to the equalization basin. Because the site was located within the 100 year flood plain of the Maumee River, we provided wetland and floodplain mitigation design.

One unique feature of the equalization basin is an overflow weir and baffle specifically designed so the basin provides primary equivalent treatment when it does overflow. The UV system was sized to handle overflows, allowing the city to treat the combined sewer overflow discharge rather than sending it into the river. This is a true success for the city and those who utilize the Maumee River downstream.
