USACE Levee Periodic Inspections
Levees are built near rivers and other waterways to protect floodplains. Flood risk and levee conditions are dynamic. Banks erode. Closures rust. Animals cause damage. Pumps wear out. Congress has mandated the comprehensive inspection of federal levees every five years. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible and sub-contracted inspections in 12 states to Stantec.
Scheduling the 240+ members of the multidisciplinary team was complex. We wrote a project plan and assigned a team for each state. And the work got done—on schedule.
Oklahoma’s 36 person team reviewed all components in 210 miles of levees, 36 levee systems, 19 pump stations, and 18 closure structures. We looked at operations and maintenance, visible deficiencies, and observed pumps and closure structures. We identified problems and made recommendations. We gave briefings and sent reports to USACE who in turn briefed the local sponsor. Each community now has a blueprint they can follow for needed repairs as well as assist in the next inspection.
