Singleton Yard Kansas City Downtown Streetcar Vehicle Maintenance Facility

When Kansas City wanted a new facility for their urban transit system, they turned to a team of experts, that included us here at Stantec, to lead the design of their streetcar vehicle maintenance facility—the Singleton Yard, located a short distance from the end of the revenue rail line. This new facility is designed to support the fleet of modern streetcars that will be used to serve the transit system.

We developed a maintenance facility for the new streetcar system in a complicated site—two acres from the rail alignment and with a 30-foot slope. Our design team studied the options. Using an interactive design charrette in an intensive team effort, we made the sloping nature of the property an advantage with the maintenance areas at-grade, and administrative and operations moved up to the second level. And our design of the variable refrigerant flow system for heating and air conditioning makes use of the steep site by locating the one-story program uphill and the two-story program downhill. In addition, sky lights (sola tubes) were incorporated to reduce lighting loads and, ultimately, electricity.

Overall, the design of the downtown streetcar maintenance facility provides the client with a facility that is less costly and improves access and function with multi-use possibilities. Designed to meet LEED Gold certification, the facility provides an opportunity for combining sustainable designs and transit systems serving the core of the city.
