Low Lake Level Pumping Station
Lake Mead is the primary water supply for southern Nevada communities, including Las Vegas, and as water levels continue to fall, Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) reached out to MWHill Joint Venture with Stantec as a partner to design a low lake level pumping station to maintain access to its primary water supply.
When water levels become too low, the existing SNWA pump stations can’t operate. In the face of a drought, this pump station becomes increasingly important to provide the community continued access to as much as 900 million gallons of water a day for the region.
After completing Phase 1, which included preliminary configuration of the pumping station and risk management evaluation, Stantec (as part of the MWHill Joint Venture) has begun design work to move the construction phase forward. This includes design and construction of the earthwork. Part of this features a 26-foot diameter, 528-foot deep access shaft, and a 16-foot diameter welded steel pipe bulkhead at the bottom of the shaft that will play an integral part in pump design.
This project will ensure Southern Nevada won’t have to worry about running out of water any time soon.
