Indian River County Beach Preservation Plan
As coastal communities evaluate the impact of climate change on rising sea levels and increasingly frequent high-impact storms, many are establishing preservation plans to maintain the quality of life and financial benefit offered by shoreline beaches. With climate change effects already apparent, Indian River County, located along Florida’s eastern coast, sought to update their beach protection plan to include strategic considerations addressing storm impact and increasing frequency, resiliency, and natural recovery potential.
We partnered with the County and conducted thorough analysis to evaluate near-term and long-term variables facing this well-known beach community. Our team analyzed shoreline change, erosion, and storm impact from hurricane events to understand how natural recovery can play a role in future planning. The modeling team utilized a number of tools, including the SBEACH simulation model to predict erosion from storm waves and water levels across scenarios and severe-storm event potential.
Based on the predicted outcomes, we were able to provide the County with effective planning and cost estimates to sustain and strengthen this beautiful beach community in the face of significant environmental challenges.
