Corona del Mar Water Treatment Plant
Located on the California coast, the Goleta Water District (GWD) is responsible for supplying potable water to 80,000 community members, and Corona del Mar is the district’s only water treatment plant. Originally constructed in the 1970s, the facility required several modifications after 40 years of laborious service. Upgrading Corona del Mar with our modern design solutions wasn’t the issue—the challenge was delivering clean water to the community during the process.
Several of the plant’s facilities had maximized their lifespan, and administrative complexes had grown ineffective for current demands. To keep the treatment plant operating, our team had to systematically isolate various areas while working on them. Furthermore, we could only modify the pretreatment system during the winter months when the water demand was low and the district could afford to shut down 50 percent of the plant.
The Corona del Mar Water Treatment Plant received LEED® Gold Certification for its 9,100-square-foot, energy-efficient laboratory, administration, and control building. Upon completion, our designs saved the Goleta Water District over $40K per year in energy costs and 8.2 MG of water per month.
