Cycle-Friendly Award Scheme, Scotland
In 2014, Cycling Scotland began developing a new Cycle-Friendly Award scheme. It was aimed at encouraging and supporting colleges and universities across Scotland to take a leading role in increasing the number of students and staff travelling by bike. Our team was commissioned by Cycling Scotland to provide monitoring and evaluation support to the project.
The Cycling Friendly Campus Award offers recognition for institutions who are working to improve their campuses in order to increase cycling. The award reflects the efforts taken by colleges and universities to make cycling more accessible for all students and staff.
It was important to develop a complete understanding of measures in and around each campus (prior to the funding award) as well as an understanding of pre-funding levels of cycling. Essentially, before and after data was required in addition to qualitative data which was obtained through focus groups with students. Since then, there have been several different measures that aim to encourage cycling including upgrading cycling facilities, events, and free bike maintenance.
The results will inform the continued success of the project by ensuring those that enter are working to improve their campuses and increase cycling every year. The aim? To create a sustainable, inclusive, and healthy Scotland where anyone, anywhere, can enjoy the benefits of cycling.
