College West Residence Refurbishment

The College West Residence building at the University of Regina was tired. Working with the university, our first task was a feasibility study. Combining our local team of higher education designers and our internal specialty financial analysts, we set out to explore options that would redefine the College West Res space. These options considered contemporary usage models while also addressing fundamental building condition, hazardous material concerns, and a strict business model for cost.

Leveraging their knowledge of refurbishment projects, the team considered the intensive hazardous material abatement process as well as building enclosure upgrades to the aging and deteriorating building skin. The recommendation? A construction management services procurement method—an integrated team approach that navigated a fast-tracked project (to meet occupation dates).

From the start, we worked with Campus Residence Services and the university Facilities Management staff to streamline a design process and create effective student living units within the existing footprint. Students want to live and study in spaces that offer variety of styles and settings, and we created comfortable spaces to encourage students to connect, learn, and find their place in the campus community.
