Camosun College - Alex & Jo Campbell Centre for Health and Wellness

Limited by traditional, inflexible classrooms, Camosun College needed to modernize their campus. The college uses a groupwork-centric teaching model, but collaboration between students constantly being hindered by the restrictive setting. To address this issue, they worked with us to create a new facility that will promote learning and bring students together.

Aligning with the college’s mandate to build a better future for their community, we designed and planned this project to promote sharing of assets across different academic programs, while creating pockets of space for student engagement. With feature stairs, a healthy café and bike changeroom facilities, the building itself promotes health and wellness for students and staff, and has a sustainable design that promotes good air quality—so much so that we put real trees in the atrium.

Upon entering the building, one will experience the Indigenous multi-purpose space—a round cedar-clad flexible space meant for gathering, healing, teaching, and smudging, to name a few uses. We also included a therapeutic garden that uses Indigenous plants and acts as a teaching garden.

The project is LEED registered targeting gold.
