University of Saskatchewan - Graduate Residence

Graduate studies push the boundaries of traditional methods of education, encouraging students to develop unique content and methodologies. It is in that spirit that the Graduate House at the University of Saskatchewan seeks to create an environment that is comfortable and flexible to allow students to tailor their personal space.

The residence emphasizes quality of life for student residents and fosters a sense of community at the building and campus scale. To achieve these goals, the design employs three strategies. Firstly, six different dwelling types (including multi-storey and lofts) are utilized to provide choice. Secondly, double height lounges distributed throughout the building link floors together to encourage interaction and the development of multi-storey neighborhoods. Finally, the major public space and lounge is placed directly adjacent to a new pedestrian “greenway”, connecting the site to the broader campus. This adjacency draws the public realm into the building at the ground plane, strengthens connections to the existing campus fabric, and develops an urban quality to the campus streetscape that encourages activity and a healthy civic lifestyle.
