McNicoll Bus Operations and Maintenance Garage Design
Looking to accommodate increasing ridership and a growing bus fleet, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) wanted to transform an 18-acre (7-hectare) site into a modern bus facility—the McNicoll Bus Operations and Maintenance Garage. The TTC engaged us to act as their technical advisor and compliance consultants.
Our architects and engineers designed a functional layout plan for industrial process systems and equipment, prioritizing worker and vehicle safety. This 30,000-square-metre (323,000-square-foot) facility provides bus storage, service, and maintenance that accommodates approximately 250 diesel and hybrid buses. It has room for an additional 50 buses, with over 600 employees working around the clock, seven days a week. The garage supports vehicle fueling, cleaning, running repairs, preventative maintenance, and light maintenance tasks. The transportation office provides a secure fare collection system, an intelligent bus-traffic control center, and support for bus operator staff.
The new C$181 million ($131 million) McNicoll Bus Operations and Maintenance Garage meets and exceeds Toronto Green Standard requirements. It also boasts one of Canada’s largest green roofs and will generate five percent of the energy needs on-site through renewable sources—in a step toward more efficient and reliable operations of the TTC bus fleet.
