Kathleen Andrews Transit Garage

Replacing an outdated garage originally built in the 1960s, the new Kathleen Andrews Transit Garage is one of North America’s leading transit facilities. Named after the first woman transit operator hired in 1975, it’s home to 30 of Edmonton Transit Service’s (ETS) new electric buses, 275 conventional buses, and 400 City staff.

In collaboration with gh3* architects, we led the charge in architectural, engineering, and construction services for the bus garage and fleet services facility, along with ETS administration offices. As prime consultant, we managed a diverse team. The decision to accommodate electric buses was made during construction, requiring extensive collaboration and design modifications. The suspended concrete slab that constitutes most of the facility was reinforced, and 28 indoor overhead charging stations and a dedicated backup generator were added. ETS is the first transit agency in North America to have overhead chargers inside its transit facilities.

The deployment of electric buses and the LEED Silver Certification are significant milestones in the City’s efforts to operate a cleaner fleet, reduce operating costs, and modernize service with the latest vehicle technology and infrastructure.
