Rebuilding Calgary’s park infrastructure along pathways and bridges

As a result of high water events that damaged areas along the Bow River, the City of Calgary enlisted us to begin addressing flooding issues within natural areas and parks under their Disaster Recovery Program (DRP). This work was extended to the 2012 and 2013 high water and flooding events within the city—after devastating flooding, our team’s previous analysis and detailed design work were invaluable to the scope of work.

Our damage assessments provided specific design options in relation to flood resiliency and restoration of impacted park infrastructure. Design options integrated green infrastructure involving bioengineering techniques and conventional erosion control design. In addition, plant complexes and implementation were designed to restore and reestablish the native vegetation and riparian edges of the sites, and to enhance aquatic and terrestrial habitat. With most work needing to be completed within a very small window, the primary constraint with this project was the timeline. We drew upon our in-house resources and were able to come in on time and under budget.

Our interdisciplinary team took pride in rebuilding Calgary’s park infrastructure along pathways and bridges in restoring impacted areas, reducing riverbank erosion, and providing resiliency against future flooding events.
