Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre
From diagnosis to treatment and beyond, each cancer patient’s experience is unique. Guided by the intricacies of what this means, the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre is designed to alleviate the fear and stress often associated with diagnosis and treatment. Following engagement of hundreds of patients, family advisors, physicians, design and contracting partners, the design is a state-of-the-art facility that fosters community and connection among patients, their support groups, and services.
Reminiscent of two figures embracing, the exterior form offers an iconic symbol of hope, while the lower podium welcomes a human-scaled arrival experience and intuitive wayfinding. The entrance establishes a strong visual connection to the building’s heart: a beautifully landscaped central courtyard surrounding a sacred space. Access to light throughout was prioritized, including in the basement (vault) areas which draw in daylight with light wells and clerestories. Connected to the Foothills Medical Centre and the University of Calgary by way of a two-story connector, the Centre has over 100 patient exam rooms, 160 inpatient beds, 100+ chemotherapy chairs, and leading-edge technology and laboratories—greatly expanding access to cancer treatment for Albertans.
Designed to enable significant strides toward new discoveries and treatments, Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre is the largest cancer treatment and research facility in Canada and the second largest in North America.
