RWJBarnabas Health – Proton Therapy Suite
Proton therapy, an advanced modality of radiation therapy, can target tumor tissues more precisely in certain situations. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital intended to invest in this technology, and they started that process while the equipment was still in its development phase.
Our job was to meet the challenges of placing a below-grade structure on a limited site without direct access to the finished equipment. How? We used an underground addition to an existing, one-story building and a lot of planning. The addition includes two treatment vaults, three levels of supporting equipment, a control area, patient receiving spaces, and building systems.
Renovated to provide the necessary program elements of a free-standing outpatient center, the existing building now serves arriving patients. To improve the arrival experience and patient transition to the below-grade space, we integrating colored lighting into focal elements. This concept was complemented by the use of stone and wood throughout, natural materials that ease you into the space.
This new Proton Therapy Suite gives hospital patients and physicians another weapon in the fight against cancer.
