Winmalee Sewerage Treatment Plant Upgrade
The Winmalee Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was commissioned in the 1980s to meet the needs of a growing population in the Penrith area. In 2015, a Pollution Reduction Program was imposed that required Sydney Water to reduce the nutrient loads from the plant. We were there to help.
Our water team was engaged by Downer in 2020 to undertake the complete civil and structural design associated with the upgrade, along with construction support services. Our designs covered new inlet works, membrane bioreactor (MBR), upgrades to the blower, switch room and chemical storage facilities as well as a dewatering facility. We also provided design services on road, earthworks, and underground pipe works. Our team worked closely with Downer and other key stakeholders to deliver the civil and structural design of this project within tight timeframes. As the STP continues operation during the project, ensuring good communication with all stakeholders, was critical to ensuring that our works didn’t impact the safe, normal operation of the treatment plant.
Upon completion, project will address reliability constraints and increase capacity for servicing beyond 2030. It will also ensure the plant meets new environment protection licence requirements and can continue to service the current and projected population beyond 2030.
