Gibson Island Recycled Water Treatment Plant

The Western Corridor Recycled Water Project is the largest recycled water scheme to be constructed in the southern hemisphere. When it came time to build new water treatment plants, we collaborated with WorleyParsons, Baulderstone Hornibrook and United Group Infrastructure to form the Gibson Island Alliance. Together, we planned, designed, built and commissioned the Gibson Island advanced water treatment plant (AWTP).

The Gibson Island AWTP treats secondary treated wastewater from Brisbane Water’s Gibson Island Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) with the option of adding secondary treated wastewater from Luggage Point WRP and has capacity to receive additional secondary treated wastewater in the future. The product—purified recycled water—has to meet the standards required by the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) as well as Queensland’s rigorous standards for the quality of recycled water supplied to augment a supply of drinking water.

So, what’s the result of this collaboration? The Gibson Island AWTP is the largest AWTP of the Western Corridor Recycle project. It has the capacity to produce 100 ML/day, providing quality drinking water direct to industry, or to replenish South-East Queensland’s drinking water storage during drought.
