Australian Open Transport Planning
What does it take to pull off one of the largest sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere? We’ve been involved in transport planning for the Australian Open every year since 2001 and have an in-depth knowledge of the precinct, operation, and issues.
Held at Melbourne Park, the Australian Open is one of the world's four annual Grand Slam Tournaments. This two-week event attracts thousands of tourists to Melbourne and huge crowds into the city, who need to move to, from, and around the event safely and efficiently. Our job? Developing the traffic and transport plans. This includes traffic management overlay design, pedestrian way finding strategies, public transport services alignment, taxi, and ride-share operations oversight, and more recently, accommodating micro-mobility (e-scooter and bicycle) parking. We’re also responsible for reviewing other plans across the precinct and auditing the installation, operation, and removal of all temporary treatments for the event. As well, we chair the transport committee on behalf of Tennis Australia, which is made up of key stakeholders, local authorities, and government agencies who are involved in the overall transport strategy for the event.
Planning for the event is no easy feat, with significant pedestrian volumes, use of public transport, diverse range of stakeholders, and the dynamic nature of the event each year. We’re proud that for the past 20+ years, we’ve played a part in helping tennis fans enjoy the Australian Open.
