Felipe Garcia, senior principal and civil engineer, spoke with Engineering News-Record about water supply the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project
When Gross Dam was planned outside Boulder, Colorado in the early 1950s, project engineers had an idea that the population served by Denver Water might increase, so they designed the 340-ft-tall curved gravity dam in a way that allowed for a 120-ft raise. Felipe Garcia, dam design lead on the project and senior principal engineer at Stantec, sat down with ENR to discuss the raise of the dam which is now well underway and poised to serve the growing population.
Stantec, along with AECOM, designed the $531-million project that will nearly triple reservoir capacity to 119,000 acre-ft—the largest raise of an existing dam using roller-compacted concrete in the world.
