Wildernesse House, Sevenoaks

The Wildernesse House is a three-storey 18th-century grade II listed stately home in Seal, Kent. Our client was planning to refurbish it structurally and architecturally into high-end retirement apartments along with the provision of a wellness centre, gym, and associated support facilities.

Stantec provided structural and civil engineering services while additional pre-planning support was provided by our geotechnical, transport, and environmental services teams. In addition to significant landscaping and infrastructure works, a restaurant block was built along with retirement apartments split over 5 blocks and 8 houses. We designed the restaurant structure using cross laminated timber framing to provide a lightweight structure over the basement plant room and achieve an aesthetic in keeping with the surrounding woodland habitat. Given the listed status of the House, coordination between the design team, local authority, residents, and council heritage officers was required.

Overall, this project aimed to set a benchmark for quality and lifestyle by reinventing accommodations available for elderly people. The building was beautifully restored and richly outfitted with a mix of modern and heritage style to provide high-end amenities for the retirement buyers’ market.
