Thames Tideway Tunnel

A nationally significant infrastructure project

    London, United Kingdom

A major new sewer for London—the width of three London buses—67 metres below ground

London’s sewer network has remained largely unchanged since it was built in Victorian times and struggles to cope with the demands of the city in the 21st century. As such, the network experiences sewage into the River Thames. The solution? The Thames Tideway Tunnel. From 2010 to 2014, we supported the client in delivering the planning consent for this major piece of infrastructure under central London.

Our work included technical support across a variety of disciplines relating to the management and delivery of the project’s statutory environmental impact assessment, the preparation of the transport assessment, and the construction logistics strategy.

We were key in developing, monitoring, and managing a plan to move over 50% of both construction and excavated materials using the River Thames, saving over 500,000 heavy goods vehicle trips on roads in central London.

The project is scheduled to open in 2023, and we are now supporting the contractor team constructing the tunnel. The 25-kilometre super sewer under the River Thames will intercept untreated raw sewage spills, reducing pollution to the river and creating a positive environmental impact for the city’s future.
