Creating People-First Infrastructure in a City Centre Campus
The aim and vision of the Sustrans Places for Everyone funded Creating People-First Infrastructure in a City Centre Campus project was to form an active, safe, and walkable learning quarter in the north-east of Glasgow city centre. Through the creation of an innovative urban realm, the city centre campus would improve the physical environment and allow the student population to move freely between the University of Strathclyde, City of Glasgow College, the nearby Glasgow Caledonian University, and the city centre.
The design of a people-first environment can act as an exemplar model of how to change city centre space to reflect the needs of those walking and cycling, as these are the preferred, sustainable modes of travel. The area is to be designed so that it functions first and foremost for pedestrians.. This will be achieved by reducing barriers to movements and improving connections between origins and destinations.
The work will build a dynamic streetscape that encourages users to make better use of the existing footways and footpaths and ensure that improved links are well designed to accommodate movements between existing buildings and communities as well as to tourist attractions in the area (Cathedral, Necropolis, and Drygate) and the wider functions of the city centre.
