Careful siting created a vital buffer from the road, reinforcing the building’s core objective of rest and relaxation

Ronald McDonald House is an internationally-franchised non-profit organisation that—when a child is a patient in a hospital—helps parents remain close without having to travel long distances. When paediatric services were moved to the Royal Hospital for Children in 2015, Yorkhill Family House (a Ronald McDonald House franchisee) set up a £3.7 million purpose-built house to maintain seamless support for families.

We provided civil and structural engineering services for the project as well as flood risk assessment services for the existing brownfield site. Our geotechnical team designed an appropriate ground investigation and assessed the findings as well as the potential presence of remnant foundations and basements on the site.

The building’s facilities include private bedrooms and lounge areas, laundry services, a communal kitchen, lounge, and crèche. Our design highlights include a hybrid steel and timber frame to accommodate the varying building-wide requirements, a steel frame with timber infill panels in the communal kitchen and lobby areas, and a prefabricated closed panel timber frame for the two-storey bedroom wing fully detailed by us.

This residential housing facility for the parents of sick children in the hospital provides an essential place of rest and support for families in their time of need.
