Mining - Environmental Services
Maintaining environmental health before, during, and after mining
We design to create balance between opportunity and preservation—we believe the best solutions realize the needs of today, without sacrificing the needs of tomorrow. By understanding your goals and the requirements from regulators and stakeholders, we can put together an environmental management strategy that works for you.
We understand the delicate balance between mining and the environment, and our team will be by your side from start to finish. This means working through exploration, planning, project development, operations, and closure. With more than 450 offices around the world, we can draw on the local knowledge associated with various regulatory environments at the national, federal, and state levels.
Our environmental teams are made up of biologists, geologists, archaeologists, material specialists, engineers, geochemists, regulatory specialists, risk assessors, and toxicologists. As your team of technical professionals, we can work together to achieve your project goals— safely and efficiently—because we all care about the outcome.
Sustainable mining with nature-based solutions
Sustainable mining considers environmental, social, and economic factors from an early stage of mine development and throughout the life of the asset. From planning through closure, nature-based solutions (NbS) add value to a mining portfolio and reduce long-term environmental liability through the uplift of ecosystems services. Sustainable mining with NbS turns liabilities into assets by providing benefits such as carbon sequestration, improved water quality, slope stabilization, and improved biodiversity. For energy, natural resources, and mining industries, plants and soils can be critical tools in combatting climate change or achieving carbon-emission reduction goals. Large swaths of land that were once used for industrial sites can be replanted and become an asset for carbon sequestration. Companies can then measure carbon sequestration via remote sensing. We can track increases in biomass over time and calculate how the area of interest is benefiting the Earth’s climate through carbon storage. Sierra Marke, account manager in Environmental Services, talks with North American Mining Magazine about the complex world of mine permitting. She describes the differences in permitting mines on public land versus private land, what causes scope changes during permitting, as well as unexpected challenges mine owners have encountered when conducting permitting surveys. Due to different requirements based on federal, state, and the local level, it’s critical to understand the specific permitting landscape at each mine site. We recently redesigned and rehabilitated two engineered wetlands to passively treat metal-impacted industrial stormwater. After determining the performance and operation issues, we prepared a rehabilitation design to convert both wetlands into downflow filters with a continuous underlying gravel drainage layer and elimination of all geotextile layers. The redesigned wetlands not only help our client remain in regulatory compliance, but also prevent heavy metals contamination from discharging into waterways. Read MoreOur People
