Tucson International Airport - Main Terminal Apron Reconstruction
Tucson International Airport’s Main Terminal Apron exceeded its life expectancy—when it passed the point of effective maintenance, it was time for it to be replaced.
Our local Airport team embarked on Tucson Airport Authority’s (TAA) largest construction manager at risk (CMAR) project to date, allowing them significant cost and time savings. The project included removing the existing 12-inch Portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP) and replacing it with approximately 130,000 square-yards (108,697 square-metres) of new 16-inch PCCP. It was critical that we worked closely with TAA and the CMAR to incorporate their perspectives during design. This allowed the team to efficiently deal with limited closure areas and issues in a cost-effective manner, as well as coordinate Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grant funding with construction sequencing. With 23 separate construction phases, the team took no more than two gates on each concourse out of service at any given time.
The project also featured a new apron storm drainage system, as well as upgraded apron lighting, a 400 hertz power system, hydrant fueling system, and a fuel truck loading stand. As a result of our work—and close coordination—we were able to create a phasing and funding plan that reduced overall construction from five years to just over two.
