Trenton Transit Center Local Concept Development Study

The City of Trenton wants to enhance pedestrian, bicycle, vehicle, and transit circulation and safety, especially around the Trenton Transit Center. Due to the configuration of the transportation network within the area, it creates a barrier to access for those using transit or just passing through. The City reached out to our traffic engineers and planners to help.

We conducted a local concept development study for the City, with support from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) and in accordance with NJDOT’s Concept Development Process. Our team evaluated circulation and safety improvements at seven intersections and their connecting roadways. As part of an existing conditions assessment, we identified needs and gaps through data collection, drone observations, model development, evaluation of bicycle facilities, a review of previous studies, and crash analysis. We also developed three road diet alternatives that reallocate the substantial excess vehicular capacity in the study area through curb-to-curb restriping. Additionally, we facilitated an outreach program, which included public and stakeholder meetings and two virtual public information centers, to present our three proposed design options for review.

Upon completion of the study, DVRPC added the City’s selected option to their Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), which will advance the study to preliminary and final design in the future.
