South Bend Public Transportation Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility
South Bend Public Transportation (Transpo) had been using the same maintenance and administrative facilities since the 1880s. In 2010, it was finally time for a change.
From the start, sustainability and long-term costs were of the utmost importance to Transpo. Our design team challenged the status quo of vehicle maintenance projects to create an architecture that is timeless, award winning, and reduces direct operating costs while increasing transportation service to the community. By incorporating sustainable design and construction strategies, we created the first LEED-NC Platinum certified bus operations and maintenance facility.
As a facility designed to meet Transpo’s future needs, operational and life-cycle cost efficiencies are inherent in the building’s design and material selections. Natural light penetrates deep into the facility, reducing the need for artificial light during the day. Other LEED components include the use of recycled materials and products from within a 500-mile radius of the site; the use of geothermal energy and solar panels for heating and cooling to reduce reliance on fossil fuels; and a recycled-water bus wash system.
