Enhancing the long-term sustainability of the Rumford Mill, producing high-quality pulp, coated, and specialty papers

After the acquisition of two US pulp and paper mills in the summer of 2018, Nine Dragons Paper (Holdings) Limited formed their Illinois-based subsidiary, ND Paper. Their goal? To sustainably produce high-quality pulp, paper, and paper-based packaging materials. One of ND Paper’s facilities, the Rumford Mill in Maine, produces one- and two-sided coated papers, specialty papers, and market pulp from two kraft pulp lines and three paper machines.

To enhance the quality of their printing and writing grades and ensure the long-term viability of the mill, ND Paper is devoting significant capital to assets including the pulp dryer and all three paper machines. Stantec is assisting in the modernization effort by contributing detailed engineering and design and onsite design support services for numerous projects throughout the mill in support of the major capital improvements. Our project involvement includes partial paper machine rebuilds as well as infrastructure improvements for the utility systems that provide power and steam to the papermaking process.

When complete, these strategic investments will make the Rumford Mill more competitive and add new job opportunities for the community.
