Aquatera Bioreactor Landfill Gas-to-Energy

Aquatera Utilities Inc. in Grande Prairie was upgrading its wastewater treatment plant using a design our team provided. It saw an opportunity to turn waste from its landfill next door into something more. But how could it capture methane gas from decomposing waste and convert it to energy efficiently?

The answer came from our experts. Our team used its collective engineering know-how, biogas collection and power generation expertise to oversee everything from planning and design to construction administration and SCADA development for this innovative and complex Landfill Gas-to-Energy project. Our work allows Aquatera to capture methane gas from decomposing waste at its existing landfill and apply a combined heat and power system to convert the gas to electricity and heat.

The electricity and heat created is used at the neighboring water and wastewater treatment plants with surplus power sold to the local electric grid. This project, now complete, has significantly reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the landfill and power and heating costs at the plants, is generating revenue, and has improved air quality by reducing odors at the landfill.
